Background of the Study

Inter-house sports competitions are an integral part of many educational institutions, designed not only to promote physical fitness but also to cultivate leadership and teamwork among students. In Maiduguri, Borno State, these competitions serve as a microcosm of societal dynamics, offering students the opportunity to develop leadership qualities in a competitive yet collaborative environment (Abdullahi, 2023). Such events encourage students to take initiative, communicate effectively, and work towards common goals, thereby nurturing skills that are essential for future leadership roles. Inter-house competitions create a structured platform where students are required to plan, strategize, and execute their roles, which fosters a sense of responsibility and accountability (Usman, 2024). In addition, these events often involve peer evaluation and mentorship, further enhancing the development of leadership qualities among participants. The competitive nature of inter-house sports compels students to overcome challenges, manage conflicts, and exhibit resilience—traits that are highly valued in leadership. Despite these benefits, there is limited empirical research focusing on the direct impact of inter-house sports competitions on leadership development, particularly in the context of Maiduguri. Challenges such as limited resources, inadequate planning, and varying levels of student participation may impede the realization of these potential benefits. Moreover, while some students emerge as natural leaders through their involvement in these competitions, others may not receive sufficient opportunities to develop their leadership skills in a supportive environment (Bello, 2025). This study seeks to examine the extent to which inter-house sports competitions contribute to the leadership development of students in Maiduguri. By analyzing various factors—including organizational structure, student participation, and the role of mentorship—the research will provide a comprehensive understanding of how sports competitions can be leveraged as effective platforms for cultivating leadership. The study also aims to identify strategies to optimize these competitions so that they better serve as training grounds for future leaders, thereby contributing to both personal development and the broader educational mission of fostering responsible citizenship (Ibrahim, 2023).

Statement of the Problem

Although inter-house sports competitions are designed to foster leadership among students, several challenges hinder their full potential in Maiduguri. Many schools experience difficulties in organizing and managing these competitions due to limited resources and inadequate administrative support (Suleiman, 2023). This often results in poorly structured events that fail to provide consistent opportunities for leadership development. Furthermore, the competitive environment, if not properly moderated, may lead to excessive rivalry rather than constructive teamwork and leadership growth. Some students, particularly those from less privileged backgrounds, may find it challenging to access leadership roles during these competitions, thereby widening the gap in leadership opportunities. Additionally, there is a lack of systematic approaches to mentoring and nurturing emerging leaders during inter-house events. While some schools implement informal mentorship programs, the absence of a standardized framework means that the leadership potential of many students remains underdeveloped (Adebayo, 2024). The resulting scenario is one where the intended benefits of inter-house sports competitions are not fully realized, and the development of leadership skills remains inconsistent across the student body. This study aims to investigate the factors that limit the leadership development outcomes of inter-house sports competitions in Maiduguri. It will explore issues such as resource allocation, event management, and the presence (or absence) of structured mentorship. The research seeks to provide evidence-based recommendations to optimize these competitions, ensuring that they serve as effective platforms for nurturing leadership qualities among students (Oluwaseun, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the impact of inter-house sports competitions on the leadership development of students in Maiduguri.

2. To identify challenges in organizing these competitions that affect leadership opportunities.

3. To recommend strategies for optimizing inter-house sports competitions to enhance leadership development.

Research Questions

1. How do inter-house sports competitions influence leadership development among students in Maiduguri?

2. What challenges hinder the effective development of leadership skills during these competitions?

3. What measures can be implemented to improve the leadership training potential of inter-house sports events?

Research Hypotheses

1. H₁: Participation in inter-house sports competitions significantly enhances leadership development among students.

2. H₂: Organizational challenges negatively impact the leadership outcomes of inter-house sports competitions.

3. H₃: Structured mentorship during competitions improves the overall leadership skills of participating students.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it examines how inter-house sports competitions contribute to leadership development in Maiduguri. The findings will provide actionable recommendations for educators and administrators to better structure these competitions, ensuring that they serve as effective platforms for nurturing future leaders (Chinwe, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses solely on the impact of inter-house sports competitions on leadership development among students in Maiduguri Local Government Area. It is limited to school-based competitions and excludes other forms of extracurricular leadership training.
